Accreditation and top ranking for NMMU Business School
The NMMU Business School today announced that its flagship MBA programme received prestigious international accreditation by AMBA; and also that the school secured a top position through the Eduniversal international business school rankings for South Africa.
“After a rigorous assessment process following much dedication and hard work by our faculty on a project that has been in the making for the whole of last year, we are pleased to announce admission to The Association of MBA’s or AMBA,” announced Dr Randall Jonas, NMMU Business School Director.

“AMBA represents the highest standard of achievement in postgraduate business education earned by the world’s best programmes. We are pleased to join a super league of the top 2% of business schools assessed and accredited by AMBA in 70 countries,” Dr Jonas said.
Dr Jonas said that the NMMU Business School was now the most national MBA programme with international accreditation, with the school’s MBA programme being offered in Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Cape Town and Centurion, Gauteng. He said that the NMMU Business School has expanded its national footprint and is rarely rivalled in offering its internationally accredited MBA in major centres like Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng.
This month, the Business School also celebrated a top position in the latest 2016 Eduniversal Ranking of the Best Business Schools. Headquartered in France, Eduniversal is a global ranking and rating agency specializing in higher education, evaluating academic institutions and programs. The agency released rankings in January 2017 for the 2016 year.
“Overall, we ranked in sixth position out of 19 South African business schools,” said Prof Cecil Arnolds, Director of the Graduate School at the Business School.
While the Business School was ranked only one place below the top five South African business schools, it outranked other business schools including Rhodes University, University of the Free State, Northwest University, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In the Eastern Cape, the NMMU Business School ranked in first position and is also now among the top three coastal business schools in country – the two other schools being located in the Western Cape.
“We are extremely thrilled with this achievement, as this ranking represents an independent assessment of our standing among business schools worldwide. Secondly, it is an honour to know that the Deans and Directors of the 1 000 ‘best selected global institutions’ recommended us as the 6th best business school out of 19 South Africa business schools “ said Professor Arnolds.
Dr Jonas said the accreditation illustrates the quality standards of education and the strategic direction of the NMMU Business School.
“We believe the accreditation and rankings confirm that the quality and standards of our MBA programme are aligned to some of the best business schools in the world, and also that we are pursuing an original, relevant and responsible direction in terms of teaching, learning and research,” Dr Jonas said.
“What is required, is business education and programmes aligned to ethical and responsible entrepreneurship, corporate responsibility, sustainability, innovation and strategy. Through our own education programmes, research agenda and stakeholder engagement, we are ready to play a role as strategic partner alongside the private sector, development agencies and government in carving a sustainable path into the 21st century for Africa,” he said.
